Gone Girl – Review

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Finished reading on 29th August 2013

“Who are you?

What have we done to each other?

Those are the questions Nick Dunne finds himself asking on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police suspect Nick. Amy’s friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn’t true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they weren’t made by him. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone.

So what did happen to Nick’s beautiful wife?”

Spoiler alert: See, its an amazing book. If you plan to read it, then better skip all reviews and read it just like that. I am sure you will be amazed. So please skip the below part if you ever plan to read it. Don’t kill the surprises.

When the story started, I was kind of yawning – the same cheating husband and the doormat wife, what’s new? I was feeling bad for our doormat wife till the story reached midway! Then bang! the tables turned just like that. The contrasting story threads of first part of the book, hits you hard on the face, especially when you reach till the end. I could not suppress a smile, when the story turned around.Yup! the writer surprises everyone, I bet, Everyone. My liking for the ‘Boy’ \‘Girl’ was swinging like a pendulum throughout the book.

Every story needs an antagonist. Every hero needs an antagonist. So I loved the amazing Amy, a rare breed she is! She is the heart of the book and everything revolves around her. The only thing which hurts, even a little, is the end where justice is ill served.

Finally after a long time, I read a book which has the potential to keep me awake whole night. (Off course, I can not do it now due to health reasons. But would have done it otherwise.) Well, the only thing which even slightly impacted the novelty of the Novel for me, is sometimes Nick resembled Brad pit and Amy resembled Angeline Jolie from Mr. and Mrs. Smith. May be it’s the similarity of the surprise elements.

The book is simply a must read…….5/5
